  Selectmen’s News

Playground and Park for Brookfield?  The Selectmen are exploring the possibility of developing a playground and memorial park on Town land.  It would be financed in part by raising funds from interested residents.  Volunteers who want to help with this project should contact Clifton Camp at 522-6077.

First Formal Recount Called in Town Election.  228 voters turned out for town elections. Turnout was 47% compared to normal turnout of about 30%. Competition generated by write-in candidates for Selectman and Planning Board Member contributed to our citizens’ interest in voting.  Two candidates for Planning Board Member received a tally within 2 votes of each other.  A formal recount was requested.  The recount took place March 21 with the Board of Selectmen as tally clerks and the Assistant Moderator presiding.  The final tally indicated that Ann Martin was indeed elected to the Board.  This was the first time in memory that a formal recount has been called in any Town election.

Increase in Number of Voters.  New registrations on Election Day totaled 11, bringing the number of registered voters to 488.   Of this number, 195 are Republicans, 87 are Democrats, and 206 are Undeclared.

The 211th Town Meeting was held March 14.  99 voters (20% of registered voters) attended.  Many warrant articles were taken care of expeditiously but controversy erupted after some warrant articles were passed over without discussion.  The Moderator required a motion to consider each article, and no motion was offered for these warrants.  When requests for reconsideration were made later, they were ruled out of order since they had not been made immediately after each warrant was passed over. As a result some capital reserve funds for road and bridge repair cannot be expended this year.

Two more elections will occur in 2006: the State General Primary on September 12 and the Statewide General Elections on November 7.  In each case polls will be open from 8 AM to 7 PM.  A statewide computer voter registration database is now being established.  New handicapped voting methods in accordance with the Help America Vote Act are anticipated for these elections.  June 6 is the last day to change party affiliation before the September Primary.  Candidates for office must register June 7 – 16th.

New Tax Assessor.   After reviewing several bids, the Selectmen contracted with the firm of Avitar to serve as the Tax Assessor for Brookfield.  They will review a portion of town properties each year.  Employees must carry proper identification.  Call Selectmen or the police if identity is uncertain.

The Town House is available for use as a community meeting facility.  Any Brookfield resident may contact Lynn Watts at 473-8939 to schedule its use for a public meeting, class, or other civic or community event.  Users are responsible for cleanup.

The Easter Egg Hunt organized by Pam Frazier provided a delightful morning for the children and families of Brookfield.  Residents hope to organize additional community events.

A New Notice Board has been placed by the driveway at the Town Office Building and another will soon replace the old one at Stoneham Corners.

Middle Schools Nixed.  Voters turned down the two new Middle Schools proposed by the Governor Wentworth Regional School District.  The Board is now faced with developing other solutions to the space needs of the District and the needed complete renovation of the high school.  The first step will be to complete the study of New Durham’s possible withdrawal from the District.

Community Legal Services has opened its doors at 112 Main Street in Union, offering low cost legal help on a sliding scale to low-income residents.  Call Ruth Hall at 473-2122 for info.

  Boards and Commissions News

Brookfield Road Committee has been reestablished.  Brad Williamson was elected Chair.  Criteria are being established to evaluate each town road, and records of conditions will be maintained.  Members are Ernie Brown, Geary Ciccarone, Dave Guttadauro, Ed Nason,

Planning Board.  After a year and a half process the Planning Board has approved a significant revision to our Master Plan.  It will now be called the 2006 Master Plan.  Bound copies  will be available in late May or early June for a nominal charge.  The Board thanks all the residents who attended meetings and workshops and provided vital feedback in completing this project.

The Planning Board is looking for three alternates.  If you are interested, contact Frank Frazier, Chairman, 522-0031.

Conservation Commission.  Judy Moore chaired the very successful Town Cleanup Day May 6.  The Commission will continue to sponsor hikes to New Hampshire’s fire lookout towers.  It plans to identify hiking trails in Brookfield.  It will manage as a wildlife refuge a seven-acre parcel of land newly acquired by the Town.  The land is accessible only from the railroad tracks between Clark Road and Cotton Valley Road.

Brookfield Craft Fair will be held on Saturday, November 11th, snow date November 18th.  The co-chairmen are Judy Brenner and Claire Donahue.  Call Judy at 522-3704 to reserve a table.  Proceeds from table rents and raffle go to the Scholastic Recognition Award Fund.

The ninth Scholastic Recognition Award will be given June 8th to the graduating senior from Brookfield with the highest four-year grade-point average.  Contributions and memorial donations to Brookfield’s Scholastic Recognition Award Fund are deductible from Federal income taxes for those who itemize deductions.  Call Chris Pinkham for information at 522-9925.

 Reminders

DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!  Purposeful feeding can result in bears getting accustomed to humans, which may cause a variety of conflicts with humans.  The end result may need to be the removal (often with lethal consequences) of the offending bear.

You are reminded that injury or destruction of any cemetery or burial ground including monuments, tombs, fences, gates and other structures is a felony.  RSA 635.6

Aluminum cans, rinsed, may be deposited in the collection

trailer at the rear of the Town House.  Mr. DeLisle donates half of

the proceeds to the Scholastic Recognition Award Fund

Intent to Cut and Intent to Excavate forms must be signed by the Selectmen and filed with the Town Assessor before work begins.  Town Driveway Permits are mandatory when putting in driveways accessing town roads.  Permits may be obtained from the Code Enforcement Officer.  State permits are required for driveways accessing state roads.

Severe Emergencies.  In case of extended power outages or other emergencies, the Town House will be open to provide water, cooking facilities, and shelter to residents in need.  Emergency care files update.  Please notify the Wakefield Town Hall or Police Department of anyone who is on a life support ventilator, uses an oxygen system or any other type of life support that runs on electricity, is bedridden and would need to be moved in the event of power failure, or lives alone and may need to be checked on in the event of power failure.

Dog licenses should have been renewed by April 30.  Dump Permits are good until January 31, 2008.  See the Town Clerk for more information.  Contact the Supervisors of the Checklist or the Town Clerk for Voter Registration.  Notify our Fire Warden, Doug Vanderpool, 522-8432 of all open burning you plan.  Check town notice boards at the Town House and Stoneham Corners for official notices of hearings, meetings, and other events.

Food Pantry is open Wednesdays, 8 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 6 PM at 138 Meadow Street, Sanbornville.  Call 522-3094.

“Good Morning, Seniors.”  Seniors or shut-ins who want to take part may call the Wakefield Police Department daily to let them know they are all right.  Call Earleen DiPrizio at 522-3232.

Fall hunting season.  Wear blaze orange for visibility in woods.  For update on hunting seasons, check the web at www.wildlife.state.nh.us or call 1-800-344-4262.  No open season for bobcat.  No closed season for coyote (day only), skunk, porcupine, weasel, wild boar, or woodchuck.
